Gamma vs PowerPoint: Which Should You Use for Your Next Deck?
The short answer
Gamma vs PowerPoint comes down to how you like to start. Gamma is built around an AI agent: you describe what you need, answer a few questions, and it writes, designs and illustrates the whole deck for you. [1] PowerPoint is the classic slide editor, with Copilot added on top for people who have a Copilot-enabled Microsoft 365 plan. [3][7] If you want a fast, good-looking first draft from a rough idea, Gamma is the easier start. If you need fine control or work inside a Microsoft 365 setup, PowerPoint is the safer pick. And you can mix them: Gamma exports to PowerPoint files. [2]
What each one is
Gamma (gamma.app) is an AI tool for making presentations. [1]
Microsoft PowerPoint runs on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and the web. [6] PowerPoint for the web is free for anyone with a sign-in. [6] Copilot in PowerPoint is Microsoft's AI assistant inside the app, and it's tied to your Microsoft 365 plan. [3]
How making a deck works
In Gamma, you type a description in the prompt bar on your dashboard. You can also paste notes, attach files, choose a template or pull in content from connected tools. [1] Then you pick a mode:
- Plan (the default): the agent asks a few questions about your goal and audience, shows you a plan, and waits for your go-ahead. [1]
- Express: skips the questions and goes straight to a first draft. [1]
- Research: pulls in sources from the web before writing. It only works with Plan. [1]
After it builds, you can ask for changes in the chat ("Slide 4 is too text-heavy") or edit by hand. [1]
In PowerPoint, you can start from a blank presentation or a template and build slides yourself. With Copilot, you open the Copilot pane, choose Agent Mode, and describe the presentation you want. Copilot may ask about your audience and style, drafts an outline you can refine, and then generates slides you can keep editing through chat. [3] Microsoft says to review what it makes. [3]
AI features
Gamma's agent handles research, writing, design and image generation from start to finish. [1] If the words are right but the look isn't, you can ask it to restyle the deck in place without changing your content. [1] On the Free plan, AI actions use credits that don't refresh. [4]
Copilot in PowerPoint can create a presentation from a prompt, and Microsoft says it can rewrite, reorganize and add slides when you ask for updates. [3][6] It also offers Speaker Coach for practice feedback. [6] If you don't see Copilot in PowerPoint, Microsoft says it may not be included in your subscription or may be turned off by your organization. [3]
Templates and design
Gamma designs each deck for you based on your plan, and you can switch to a new style direction later. [1] You can also choose a template when you start. [1]
PowerPoint offers thousands of customizable templates. [6] Its Designer tool (called Design Suggestions for Copilot users) suggests slide layouts when you add pictures, a list of items or dates, but it needs a Microsoft 365 subscription. [8] Starting from your own template lets Copilot keep its theme. [3]
Collaboration and sharing
Gamma shares by link. You set each person's access to No access, View, Comment or Edit, and workspace settings can override individual sharing. [5] Some extras depend on your plan: password protection is on Pro and higher, and making a gamma discoverable on the web is a Pro feature. [5]
PowerPoint lets several people work on a presentation at the same time once it's saved to OneDrive or SharePoint. [9] You can invite people with edit or view access, see who's on which slide, leave comments, tag people with @mentions, and look back at earlier versions. [9] Microsoft says sharing and working together in real time doesn't require a subscription, as long as files are saved in and shared from OneDrive. [6]
Export options
Gamma exports to PDF, PNG and PowerPoint (PPTX). For Google Slides, you export a PPTX and upload it. [2] Tables come across as editable tables in PowerPoint, and speaker notes are included in PPTX exports. [2] A few things to know:
- Exports match Present Mode, not Edit Mode. [2]
- Free-plan exports carry a "Made by Gamma" badge. Any paid plan removes it from future exports. [2]
- Word (.docx) export isn't supported. [2]
PowerPoint files are the standard many people already use, and you can also save a presentation as a PDF so others can view it without PowerPoint. [10]
Pricing and free plans
Gamma has Free, Plus, Pro, Ultra and Business plans. [4] Here's what Gamma's help center lists:
- Free: AI creations, the AI agent, basic image models, and up to 10 slides per prompt. New accounts get 400 credits that don't refresh; you can earn 200 more per referral. [4]
- Plus: 1,000 monthly credits, no Gamma badge, advanced image models, and up to 100 slides per prompt. [4]
- Pro: 4,000 monthly credits, plus premium image models, password protection, custom domains, detailed analytics and API access. [4]
- Ultra: 20,000 monthly credits and the most advanced models. [4]
Plans are billed per user. [4] For current prices, check Gamma's pricing page.
PowerPoint for the web is free. [6] For the desktop apps with Copilot, Microsoft's US store lists:
- Microsoft 365 Personal: $9.99/month or $99.99/year, for one person. [7]
- Microsoft 365 Family: $12.99/month or $129.99/year, for up to six people, but AI features are for the subscription owner only. [7]
- Microsoft 365 Premium: $19.99/month or $199.99/year, with more Copilot usage and extra AI features. [7]
Copilot usage limits apply on these plans. [7]
Who each suits best
Gamma suits you if:
- You want a polished draft from a rough idea, fast
- You'd rather tell an AI what to change than nudge text boxes
- You mostly share decks by link
PowerPoint suits you if:
- You need precise control over every slide
- Your workplace or school runs on Microsoft 365
- You want to co-edit in real time through OneDrive
- You present often and want tools like Speaker Coach
Your next step
Pick one real deck you need to make this month. If you're starting from scratch, try Gamma's free plan with Plan mode and see how close the first draft lands, then export it to PPTX if you want to finish in PowerPoint. If you already have Microsoft 365, open PowerPoint, look for the Copilot icon, and try Agent Mode with the same topic.
