Wedding Planning Checklist by Month
The short answer
Start with the big decisions: budget, guest count, date and venue. Book the vendors who fill up first, send invitations a couple of months out, and leave the last month for final details. Couples who married in 2025 were engaged for 14 months on average, so a 12-month plan fits many couples’ timelines. [1] If you have less time, do the same steps closer together. Timing is a general guide; adjust to your date and vendors.
Some context
These figures are from The Knot’s survey of more than 10,000 U.S. couples who married in 2025: [2]
- Average engagement: 14 months. About 40% were engaged 11 to 18 months. [1]
- Nearly 60% started planning within a month of getting engaged. [1]
- 76% married between May and October. [1]
- Average guest count: 117. Couples hired 13 vendors on average. [2]
If you want a date from May to October, keep in mind that many other couples will too.
